Blogging is one of the best SEO tools for small businesses. It is relatively easy and provides great content to use across numerous platforms. However, there are a few factors that need consideration when it comes to writing a blog that is SEO friendly.
Write for your readers
This is the most crucial step. There is no point writing a blog, if nobody is going to read it. Make sure that the topic and writing style of your blog are in line with what your readers expect. Writing an SEO friendly blog does not mean that you should focus on the SEO more than the writing. It is imperative to write cohesively, with your brand voice in mind, in order to produce a blog that is worth reading.
Don’t overdo it with keywords
Generally, blogs that focus too much on adding as many keywords as possible lose their readability. Decide on a few keywords that suit the content of your blog and weave them into your writing seamlessly. Google also picks up on synonyms, which is a great way to make your point without overdoing it on the keywords. Your keyword should be used in your first paragraph and the ideal keyword density in an article is 0.5% – 2.5%. On top of this, you can use synonyms and secondary keywords, so long as they are not affecting the readability of the blog.
Use SEO friendly headings
Headings are important as they provide structure to your blog. They not only help your readers navigate the content, but also help Google identify the main topics within a long post. This ultimately improves your ranking. To assist both Google and your readers, it is important to use subheadings strategically. Your subheadings should, at some point, contain your keywords to produce an SEO friendly blog.
Optimize the length of your blog
The optimal length for an SEO friendly blog article is 300-700 words. Google will penalize articles that are too short and articles that are too long will discourage your readers. You need to be succinct without sacrificing explanations or keywords.
Link to previous content & external content
If you have written something about the topic you are blogging about before, link it in your current blog. This will show that you have some authority on the subject and will also improve your ranking in Google. This works for external links as well. If there is an official document or statistic or video that will validate what you are saying, add the link to your post.
Add meta descriptions
A meta description is the extract or description of your article that will appear on search engines. Make sure this is something that very briefly gives an idea of what the article is about and contains your keywords.
Ensure your title contains keywords
Your title is the first thing people see when they look at your blog and your SEO title is the first thing they see when they find it in a search engine. They need to be catchy and contain your keywords.
Ensure your URL contains keywords
Making sure that your URL also contains the same keywords is important for SEO friendly blogging.
Use images & make sure they are named appropriately
Pictures are a great way to add an extra dimension to your written work, whether they explain something or are simply there to be visually appealing. Make sure you use pictures on all of your SEO friendly blog posts and make sure that these pictures are labelled correctly. The image tags and titles need to describe what the image is about and link back to the blog or your website.
